The AOM Story

The Art of Mentoring Story

Art of Mentoring began with a simple insight: careers and communities transform when people have access to thoughtful, well-supported mentoring. In the late 1990s, our founders launched one of the first structured mentoring programs for women in marketing and saw how it built confidence, accelerated careers and opened doors that had previously been closed. Over time, more organisations came to us with the same challenge: “We believe in mentoring, but we don’t know how to do it well, at scale, or fairly for everyone.” Art of Mentoring grew in response to that need, evolving from a single program into a specialist mentoring partner for organisations around the world.

Why We Exist

Too many people still miss out on mentoring because programs are informal, exclusive, or left to chance. Without intentional mentoring, talent is overlooked, future leaders lack role models, and organisations struggle to create cultures of belonging and growth.

Art of Mentoring exists to change that. We help organisations make mentoring strategic, inclusive and measurable—so that anyone, at any stage of their career, can find guidance, connection and support. Our cause is to make mentoring available to all, turning it from a “nice idea” into a proven driver of engagement, retention and leadership readiness.

Our Approach

Our team brings decades of experience in mentoring research, program design and delivery. We partner with associations, corporations and government agencies to design evidence‑based programs, support participants with practical resources, and use data to track outcomes and continuously improve.

We combine human insight with smart technology so programs are both deeply personal and highly scalable. From matching mentors and mentees to training, resources and evaluation, every element is designed to make mentoring easier to run and more impactful for participants.

A Brand Built on Connection

Our new visual identity reflects what we do best: create strong, modern, human connections within complex organisations. The bold forms and vibrant purple signal energy, momentum and a forward‑looking approach to mentoring, while the clean structure mirrors the frameworks we bring to every program.

Where earlier imagery focused on symbolism, today’s Art of Mentoring brand is centred on clarity and impact—making it easy for leaders, mentors and mentees to see themselves in our work. It is a visual expression of our belief that when people are supported to learn from each other, everyone moves further, faster, together.

Our Leadership Team

Behind Art of Mentoring is a leadership team united by a shared purpose: to make high‑quality mentoring accessible to more people in more places. Drawing on diverse sector experience, they champion rigorous program design, ethical practice and continuous innovation so that every mentoring program delivers meaningful outcomes for individuals, organisations and communities.

We are moving beyond the era of mentoring as a "nice-to-have". My vision is to empower organizations with the technology and data they need to turn human connection into a strategic engine for retention, leadership, and growth.

Angus Washington

Chief Executive Officer

Angus leads Art of Mentoring with a clear commercial reality in mind: talent is an organization’s most valuable, and volatile, asset. With over twenty years of global leadership experience across Australia and Asia, he brings a sophisticated understanding of how high-performing teams are built and sustained.

Before taking the helm, Angus founded and successfully exited two recruitment firms in Hong Kong and held senior roles with global giants like Michael Page. He understands the “talent lifecycle” from every angle. Today, he combines that commercial rigour with a people-centric philosophy, guiding the Art of Mentoring team to deliver scalable, secure, and impactful solutions for enterprise clients.

The transformative moments in my life were shaped by exceptional mentors who invested in my growth. My goal is to pay that forward, ensuring our clients have the framework and support to create those same life-changing connections for their own people.

Craig McKenzie

Head of Client Success

As Head of Client Success, Craig bridges the gap between complex strategy and day-to-day execution. What makes Craig unique is his direct operational experience: before joining the team, he managed the extensive AHRI mentoring program himself.

He understands exactly what keeps program managers up at night because he has sat in their chair. Today, he uses that deep, first-hand knowledge to lead the Art of Mentoring success team, ensuring that every organization we partner with receives not just software support, but expert guidance on building a scalable culture of mentorship.

Mentoring isn't just a "nice to have", it is a critical driver of organizational performance. My mission is to help leaders see the direct link between investing in human connection and achieving sustainable, long-term business growth.

Frequently asked questions

How can we design a mentoring program that aligns with the diverse development needs of our employees?

At Art of Mentoring, we begin by working with you to clarify what success looks like for your organisation, whether that is leadership development, talent retention, inclusion, or capability building. We then design a structured mentoring program that reflects your workforce context, participant needs, and development priorities. Our approach combines thoughtful program design, evidence-based matching, and ongoing support to ensure mentoring remains relevant and effective for participants at different career stages and roles.

Can your mentoring programs be tailored to suit our organisation’s goals or industry?

Yes. All Art of Mentoring programs are tailored to suit your organisational goals, industry context, and workforce profile. We work across corporate, government, association, and designing mentoring programs that align with your values, strategy, and operating context. This ensures mentoring supports both individual development and broader organisational outcomes.

Do you offer support for different types of mentoring, such as peer, reverse, group, or short-term mentoring?

Yes. Art of Mentoring supports a range of mentoring approaches, including peer mentoring, reverse mentoring, group mentoring, and other structured formats. We help you select the most appropriate mentoring model based on your objectives, participant needs, and organisational environment, and ensure each approach is supported by clear frameworks, guidance, and governance.

How do you ensure effective mentor and mentee matching?

Effective matching is central to successful mentoring. We use a structured, evidence-based matching methodology supported by a configurable matching algorithm that can be tailored to each program’s goals and priorities.

The matching process considers development goals, experience, preferences, and organisational objectives, with weighting applied to criteria based on what matters most for each program. This approach goes beyond basic profile matching to create meaningful, productive mentoring relationships aligned with both individual and organisational outcomes.

Can we incorporate our own learning content or values into the program?

Yes. Art of Mentoring programs are designed to integrate your organisation’s values, learning frameworks, and existing development initiatives. We can incorporate your own learning content alongside Art of Mentoring resources, ensuring mentoring feels relevant, consistent, and aligned with your internal culture and priorities.

Do your programs provide training for mentors and mentees?

Yes. Art of Mentoring provides structured learning and guidance for mentors, mentees, and program managers. This includes online learning, practical resources, and ongoing support to help participants understand their roles, build confidence, and engage effectively in the mentoring relationship. This approach supports consistency, quality, and positive outcomes across the program lifecycle.
